It's an expensive time to have a young family.

In addition to sky-high prices at the grocery store and at the gasoline pump, among other costs, there's also the costs of raising young children, including disposable diapers, baby formula and wipes.

That's why the staff at Coldwell Banker Marquise Realty in South Surrey held their third annual Diaper Drive event Saturday (June 3), with an aim of collecting 100,000 diapers for people in need in the local community.

"It was awesome! It was a really good event," said Coldwell managing broker and Realtor Bianca Myddleton.

A fundraising event the realty office started in 2020, during the COVID pandemic, Myddleton said the need remains for families caring for young children.

"I went and I bought diapers and I thought, ‘These are so expensive,’" she said.

"Then it turned into, can we do something to help (people in need)? With that… it became an annual fundraiser."

The Croydon Drive event went from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and, Myddleton is confident, brought in more than their aim of 100,000 diapers.

"Last year, we opened it up to include baby wipes and formula, as those are expensive, too," she noted.

With a live band playing a few sets of music, popcorn, donuts and other refreshments, the day was festive, with people dropping off contributions as individuals and in groups.

All items donated will be distributed through Sources Community Resources Centres and Options Community Services Society to families in the area in need of such supplies.

"We are so grateful to the community and our sponsors, our MLAs and so many others… the community really came through."
