MABLETON — Whitefield Academy defeated Walker 49-6 on Friday for a senior night victory and a shot at a region championship.
“Winning is always good,” Whitefield coach Robert Walsh said, “but to do it for the seniors who’ve put in the work for years now and continue our great season makes it even more meaningful, and now we just have to keep getting better.”
The Wolfpack (7-2, 4-0 Region 5A Division I) will make the trip to Roswell next week, facing Fellowship Christian — the top team of the opposing subregion — for the region title. A win would bring the program its second region title in as many years under Walsh.
Whitefield got their first touchdown early in the first quarter to go up 7-0 on a 35-yard run from Mason Hollingsworth.
Hollingsworth struck again just minutes later with a 28-yard touchdown run to put Whitefield up 14-0. Hollingsworth had only the two carries in the game for 63 yards and two touchdowns.
The score was 21-0 early in the second quarter after a 3-yard touchdown carry from Ben Yarbrough.
Whitefield continued adding on midway through the second quarter as Amos Robertson got into the end zone with a 35-yard carry to make it 28-0. Robertson carried the ball five times for 98 yards and the score.
With just over 3minutes remaining in the half, Whitefield scored again on a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ian Kelly to receiver Thomas Baxter to make the score 35-0.
Walker (2-7, 0-4) got on the board with a 70-yard touchdown carry from Grant Addison to make the score 35-6. Addison was a bright spot for the Wolverines with three carries for 75 yards and the score, as well as two catches for 27 yards.
Whitefield led 42-6 at halftime as running back Matthew Grant tumbled into the end zone from 1 yard out with seconds left in the half. Grant carried the ball 11 times for 28 yards and the touchdown in the game.
The only second-half score came courtesy of the Wolfpack’s Cole Rabalais as he returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
